Bienvenido Velasco, panamanian photographer from the Spanish News Agency EFE, has won the first prize of the prestigious International Photography Awards (IPA) in the category of “Press, General News”, for his images of the moment in which a man shot two demonstrators during the mining protests that took place at the end of last year in Panama.
These International Photography Awards, based in Los Angeles, United States, aim to “salute the achievements of the world's best photographers, discover new and emerging talent and promote the appreciation of photography,” according to its official communication.
Among this year's award winners is also Mustafa Hassona, of the turkish Anadolu news agency, who received the “Press Photographer of the Year” award for his coverage of the Gaza conflict, with images such as a Palestinian holding in his arms what looks like the blanket-covered corpse of a child or another image of a girl still alive in the rubble, while rescue services try to dig her out.
