ALGIERS — The first vice-president of the Forum of Women Parliamentarians of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Farida Ilimi chaired the opening session of the Forum of Women Parliamentarians concerning the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on democracy and human rights, the People's National Assembly (Lower House of Parliament) said on Monday in a press release.

In her capacity as first vice-president of the IPU Forum of Women Parliamentarians, Ilimi chaired the opening session of the Forum of Women Parliamentarians, in the presence of Fouzia Ben Badis, a member of the Council of the Nation (Upper House of Parliament).

The session featured a comprehensive discussion on the draft resolution presented by the Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights concerning the impact of AI on democracy, human rights and the rule of law, the same source said.

The participants' discussions primarily focused on aspects of the resolution concerning gender-based violence.

In this regard, they addressed several key issues, particularly how parliaments should handle AI-related policies and resolutions to ensure respect for human rights and prohibit gender-based violence, stressing the need to protect women's rights.

The statement concluded that Ilimi had previously participated in the meeting of the women parliamentarians' bureau, where the Forum's upcoming action program was determined.
