Lusa - Business News - Mozambique: Consumer prices rise 0.16% in September, after four months of falls

Maputo, Oct. 11, 2024 (Lusa) - Consumer prices in Mozambique rose 0.16% in September, following four consecutive months of falling prices, for a year-on-year inflation rate of 2.45% that was nevertheless lower than the rate in August, according to data from the National Statistics Institute (INE).

The INE's Consumer Price Index (CPI), released on Friday, shows that Mozambique "recorded a price increase of around 0.16%" last month, compared to August, in which the food and non-alcoholic drinks division stood out, "contributing around 0.09 [of a] percentage point to the total monthly variation.".

Previously, the CPI had fallen 0.11% on the month in August, 0.05% in July, 0.21% in June and 0.38% in May.

Year-on-year inflation was 2.45% in September, down from a rate of 2.75% in August.

"The food and non-alcoholic beverages division saw the biggest rise in prices, varying by around 5.29%," states the report of the year-on-year figures.

Previously, year-on-year inflation had been 2.97% in July, 3.04% in June, 3.07% in May, 3.26% in April, 3.03% in March, 4% in February, 4.19% in January and 5.3% in December.

In July of 2022, year-on-year inflation was almost 13%.

In 2023, Mozambique had average 7.1% inflation, according to previous INE figures, contrasting with the official government forecast of 7.0%.
