Madrid, Oct. 2, 2020 (Lusa) - Naturgy has been ordered to pay Portuguese energy company EDP €176 million in damages for breach of a contract for the transport of liquefied natural gas, a decision that the Spanish energy company has already contested, the Spanish press reported on Wednesday.
According to the Spanish press, which cites Naturgy's appeal filed in a New York court in the United States, where the legal proceedings are taking place, the compensation was decided by an arbitration body last June in response to a complaint from EDP.
The Portuguese company complained that Naturgy had breached a contract to transport liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Trinidad and Tobago to Bilbao, Spain.
According to the same information published in the Spanish press, Naturgy did not fulfil the contract, citing problems arising from the outbreak of war in Ukraine in February 2022.
EDP contested this and claimed that the supply of LNG to Naturgy itself had remained undisturbed. The first court decision found in favour of the Portuguese company and established compensation of $195 million (around €176 million).
Naturgy's appeal was filed last week, on 27 September, and the Spanish company argues that EDP withheld information in the process.
