APS - AU approves President Tebboune’s recommendations for NARC activation

ACCRA (Ghana) — The 6th Mid-Year Coordination Meeting of the African Union (AU) took note of the report put forward by the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, in his capacity as president of the North African Regional Capacity (NARC), which is part of activating the African Standby Force (ASF) being one of the key pillars of the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA). The final declaration of the meeting approved the report’s recommendations.

In the report, read on his behalf by Prime Minister Nadir Larbaoui, the President of the Republic had recommended the need to bolster the achievements made and to cement the results obtained through:

Firstly: Welcoming the announcement of the operationalization of the North African Regional Capacity.

Secondly: Providing essential support to the Executive Secretariat of the North African Regional Capacity, with a view to implementing the programmed simulation exercise, set to boost the preparation of the African Standby Force.

Thirdly: Speeding up the adoption of the memorandum of understanding relating to the African Standby Force between the African Union Commission, and the Regional Economic Communities and regional mechanisms.

Fourthly: Pushing ahead with revising the strategic concept of the African Standby Force to further align it with the African Union’s doctrine concerning peacekeeping operations, while marshalling essential backing for it as an integral part of the African Peace and Security Architecture.
