Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Cimpor opens new cement plant in Cameroon

Lisbon, July 19, 2024 (Lusa) - Cimpor inaugurated a new plant in Cameroon on Friday, a country where it currently has an annual production capacity of 1.2 million tonnes of cement and 400,000 tonnes of calcined clay, according to a statement.

‘This investment will significantly expand Cimpor's presence in Africa, while at the same time playing an important role in the development of Cameroon's infrastructure,’ said the group.

‘Following its investments in Côte d'Ivoire, Cimpor Global decided to invest in Cameroon and began work in February 2020 on a greenfield investment in a cement plant integrated with a new calcined clay production line,’ the statement said.

The group built ‘a plant in Kribi, equipped with the world's first and only flash calcined clay production line currently in operation, which opened on 29 October 2023’.

The company, through its subsidiary in Cameroon, Cimpor Cameroun, ‘currently has an annual production capacity of 1.2 million tonnes of cement and 400,000 tonnes of calcined clay,’ he said.

Cimpor has been announcing ‘a series of investments to increase the sustainability of its activity, with a planned investment of 270 million euros by 2030,’ it said.

According to the group, this investment ‘includes the development of low-carbon cements, the reduction of the CO2 footprint of the plants, the production of electricity through photovoltaic panels and the creation of an innovative production system that uses hydrogen as its main engine’.

The group also recalled the €121 million investment in the Alhandra plant, a figure announced in May this year. This investment, “through the modernisation of infrastructures such as kilns and mills, or by investing in the use of renewable energies, will make it possible to streamline processes and significantly reduce the environmental footprint.”

The Taiwan Cement Corporation (TCC) completed the purchase of Cimpor in March this year and now owns 100% of the Portuguese company.
