Luanda, July 19, 2024 (Lusa) - Delegations from Angola and Portugal met in Luanda on Friday to discuss issues related to strengthening bilateral cooperation before signing new legal instruments, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced.
The meeting, led by the Portuguese ambassador, Francisco Alegre Duarte, and ambassador Domingos Silva Coelho, director of Legal Affairs, Treaties and Litigation at the Angolan ministry, served to address ‘issues related to the signing of new legal instruments aimed at consolidating and expanding ties between Angola and Portugal,’ as part of the strengthening of bilateral relations between the two countries.
The meeting took place shortly before Prime Minister Luís Montenegro's visit to Angola, which begins on Tuesday and ends on Thursday.
‘In recent years, in addition to the traditional areas, Angola and Portugal have concluded more than 60 legal instruments, especially in the areas of education, health, justice, defence and internal administration, tourism, public administration, digital transition and the blue economy,’ the ministry said.
Angola and Portugal established political-diplomatic relations in March 1976 and signed their first legal instrument, the General Bilateral Cooperation Agreement, on 26 June 1978.
Angola proclaimed independence from Portugal on 11 November 1975.
