Macau, China, July 19, 2024 (Lusa) - Macau received more than 2.55 million visitors in June, a drop of 5.2% from May but an increase of 15.5% on June of last year, according to data released on Friday by the region's Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC).
The figure (2,551,318) also represents a "recovery" to 82.4% of the figure recorded in June 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic, the bureau said in a statement.
After three years of strict restrictions due to the pandemic, the territory at the beginning of last year reopened its borders to all foreigners, including tourists.
In June, the number of day trippers (1,316,114) and tourists staying overnight (1,235,204) rose by 25.8% and 6.1% year-on-year respectively.
In the first half of this year as a whole, the number of visitors to Macau totalled 16,719,983 - up 43.6% from the same period in 2023.
The majority of visitors recorded in the first half continued to be from mainland China: 11,537,999, or 52.9% more year-on-year, the DSEC said.
