Lisbon, July 11, 2024 (Lusa) - The book "Palavras Nómadas" by Dora Nunes Gago, published by Húmus, won the Maria Ondina Braga Grand Prize for Travel Literature, the Portuguese Writers' Association (APE) announced on Thursday.
The jury of the prize, co-ordinated by José Manuel Mendes, considered that "Palavras Nómadas" is a "work of varied and rich observations concerning the places where the journeys take place, with descriptions of great sensory vividness, which do not lack an intimate look at the places and the people, as well as the ability to capture what has been called 'génie du lieu'".
"In a prose of great fluidity, full of reflections where perceptions, memories, culture, literature and history intersect, the author manages to provoke an adherent reading from the very first pages, whose rhythm and interest she is able to maintain throughout the considerable length of the work," she adds.
The jury, which also included Guilherme d'Oliveira Martins, Isabel Cristina Mateus and José Manuel de Vasconcelos, unanimously awarded the prize.
This 7th edition of the Maria Ondina Braga Grand Prize for Travel Literature, organised by the Portuguese Writers' Association and sponsored by Braga City Council, was open to works in Portuguese and by Portuguese authors published in 2023.
The monetary value of this Grand Prize is €12,500 for the winning author.
Last year's winner was José Pedro Castanheira, with "Volta aos Açores em Quinze Dias" (Around the Azores in Fifteen Days), while previous editions have honoured Paulo Moura, Afonso Cruz, Alexandra Lucas Coelho, Rui Miguel Tovar and António Mega Ferreira.
