Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Bovine haemorrhagic outbreaks in two parts of country

Lisbon, July 2, 2024 (Lusa) - Portugal's Directorate-General for Food and Veterinary (DGAV) said on Tuesday that two outbreaks of epizootic bovine haemorrhagic disease have been identified this year, without symptoms, in the districts of Beja and Santarém.

"In 2024, as a result of pre-movement tests, two outbreaks have been identified: one in the district of Beja and the other in the district of Santarém, both without symptoms," reads a note from the DGAV.

The surveillance plan for this disease was implemented in 2023. This plan provides for the notification and investigation of clinical suspicions, serological surveillance in sentinel animals, among other measures.

Symptoms of this disease include fever and lack of appetite, lesions on the mucous membrane of the mouth, excessive saliva production and difficulty swallowing.

The animal usually recovers within two weeks, although this disease can be lethal.

The DGAV is a central service of the State's direct administration, with administrative autonomy.
