Brussels, Sept. 22, 2026 (Lusa) - The price of fuels and lubricants for private transport in the European Union (EU) rose by 23.8% year-on-year in August, following increases of 13.7% in June and 16.9% in July, according to Eurostat.

According to the EU's statistical office, Portugal ranks 12th among Member States, with a 24% increase in the price of fuels and lubricants for private vehicles, in a table led by Bulgaria (34.5%), Lithuania (28.8%) and Finland (27.6%).

Hungary (1.3%), Sweden (6.1%) and Ireland (11.7%) recorded the smallest rises in fuel and lubricant prices.

Eurostat also notes that, in August, diesel prices rose by 32.0% across the EU and by 30.2% in Portugal, while petrol prices rose by 19.6% and 15.5%, respectively.

Bulgaria (46.9%), Finland (41.2%) and the Netherlands (40.6%) recorded the sharpest year-on-year rises in diesel prices in August.

Meanwhile, Lithuania (27.5%), Bulgaria (26.2%) and Romania (25.5%) saw the biggest rises in petrol prices.
