Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Telecom incident caused by distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack

Lisbona, Sept. 15, (Lusa) - Technical analysis by Meo's teams confirms that a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack caused the incidents and that customer and company data remained secure, an official source said Tuesday.

«Instability in BGP routing was a consequence of the attack, not its cause; The company maintained the security of its data and that of its customers during the incident,» added the same source, noting that the incidents occurred «yesterday [Monday] and in the early hours of this morning on its international network infrastructure» and «resulted from a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack».

The incidents «occurred during the periods - 12:45 a.m.–2:55 a.m., 5:30 p.m.–7:30 p.m. and 10:45 p.m.–1:05 a.m. – specifically targeting Meo's infrastructure, and involved high volumes of traffic that caused congestion and temporary degradation of the international network», explained an official source from the company led by Ana Figueiredo.

According to the same source, this situation explains the difficulties some customers experienced accessing websites and services reliant on international traffic.

The nature of the attack was identified «following an analysis carried out by Meo's engineering, operations and cybersecurity teams, based on telemetry data, traffic monitoring, network indicators and mitigation mechanisms activated during the incident».

The traffic patterns and other technical indicators observed «confirm a targeted DDoS attack».

In response to the attack, the company said that Meo's teams «acted immediately and activated the detection, protection, mitigation and recovery mechanisms designed for this type of situation», and the service has now stabilised.

The company added that «the systems remained secure, and Meo's data and that of its customers remained fully protected».

The company reported the incident to the National Cybersecurity Centre (CNCS) and states that it is liaising with the relevant authorities, technology partners and the technical community to monitor the situation.

Furthermore, Meo «has monitoring, detection, control, protection and response mechanisms specifically designed for this type of incident, which enabled it to identify the threat, mitigate the attack and restore network stability».

The company «will continue to monitor the situation closely and strengthen the protection and resilience mechanisms of its infrastructure» and remains «committed to the security, resilience, robustness and quality of its networks and services, ensuring the continuity of communications for its customers, businesses and institutions».
