Maputo, Sept. 15, 2026 (Lusa) - The United Kingdom and Mozambique plan to invest €9.3 million in nature conservation and the blue economy, the British diplomatic mission in Maputo announced on Tuesday.

In a statement sent to Lusa, the Embassy noted that the meeting between the UK's Special Representative for Nature, Ruth Davis, and the Mozambican Head of State, Daniel Chapo, held on Monday in Maputo, centred on the partnership between the two countries in the areas of the blue economy, biodiversity and climate resilience, whilst also discussing opportunities to strengthen cooperation on the oceans at the forthcoming meetings of the United Nations General Assembly and the Conference of the Parties (COP).

The two officials also discussed expanding ocean protection to safeguard jobs, food security, livelihoods and the resilience of communities, with Davis recognising Mozambique's leadership in sustainable ocean management and marine conservation.

The investment of £8 million (€9.3 million) includes £2 million (€2.3 million) for a partnership with the Biodiversity Conservation Foundation (Biofund), aimed at strengthening community-led conservation and sustainable livelihoods, and up to £6 million for the COAST Facility by 2030, as part of the UK's Blue Planet Fund, to support sustainable fisheries, mangrove restoration and climate resilience in Mozambique.

«Mozambique's leadership in ocean conservation and the blue economy is inspiring,» said Ruth Davis, quoted in the press release, highlighting the shared ambition of both countries to develop this partnership.

Mozambique aims to expand its marine protected areas to 30% of its maritime territory by 2035.

During her visit to Maputo, Ruth Davis is also due to meet with private-sector representatives to discuss investment in nature conservation.
