Lisbon, Sept. 15, 2026 (Lusa) - Renewable energy accounted for 74.4% of the electricity generated in mainland Portugal between January and August this year, according to the latest bulletin from the Renewable Energy Association (APREN).
In August alone, the share of renewables in electricity generation stood at 69.2%, corresponding to 2,298 gigawatt-hours (GWh) out of a total of 3,320 GWh generated during the month.
«August stood out for the strong contribution and balance between solar power (which once again led production) and wind power, accounting for 23.7% and 23.3% of the generation mix, respectively,» the association stated in a press release.
Hydropower came third, with 14.9% of the total, followed by bioenergy with 7.3%.
Between January and August, there were 707 non-consecutive hours during which renewable generation was sufficient to meet the entire electricity demand in mainland Portugal.
In August alone, renewable generation was sufficient to meet the entire demand for 14 hours.
During the same period, Portugal ranked fourth amongst the eight European countries analysed by APREN in terms of the share of renewables in electricity generation, behind Norway (97.4%), Denmark (95.4%) and Austria (79.9%).
The association points out that the comparison considers only the main countries from different European markets «in order to obtain a representative overview for comparison».
According to the bulletin, renewable generation enabled savings of €809 million on natural gas imports and €374 million on electricity imports between January and August. APREN also estimates savings of €492 million on CO₂ emission allowances.
For APREN's Policy and Market Intelligence Leader, Susana Serôdio, «the August results perfectly illustrate the value of complementarity in the electricity mix, with solar and wind working in harmony to account for almost half of national generation».
«Renewable energies have a proven impact on reducing the price of electricity and are already a key driver of the Portuguese economy,» she adds.
