Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Coimbra-based group joins investment committee of Oman health fund

Coimbra, Portugal, Sept. 7, 2026 (Lusa) - The IGHS Group, based in Coimbra, in central Portugal, has been included as a permanent member of the investment committee of the One Healthcare Fund, which focuses on the healthcare sector and forms part of Oman's sovereign investment framework, the company announced on Monday.

«This invitation recognises the expertise the group has been developing in areas that are fundamental to the Fund's activities,» said José Alexandre Cunha, chair of the IGHS Group and a member of the board of directors of Oman International Hospital.

The invitation, extended by the Oman Brunei Investment Company (OBIC), also encompasses strategic advisory roles for the Fund and establishes the Coimbra-based group as «one of the leading partners of one of the Gulf region's principal sovereign healthcare investment vehicles».

«It is based, above all, on the trust built up over more than ten years of leading international projects, particularly in Oman, both in the design, management and operation of hospitals and in the pharmaceutical sector,» he added.

Among the projects that reflect this track record, the Oman International Hospital – entirely designed and managed by Idealmed GHS – and the international expansion of InnovCell Therapeutics, a company in which the Group holds a stake and which operates in various European and Asian markets, stand out.

Alongside the development and direct management of its own projects, the Group has been «providing consultancy services to international entities, including institutions and major business groups in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, China and Hong Kong».

«This combination of sector-specific knowledge, execution capacity and international experience enables us today to participate in projects of very different natures and scales,» said Cunha.

Regarding the experience in the Sultanate, he highlighted the transformation currently taking place in the country, noting that Oman is undergoing «a profound modernisation, with a very clear vision of economic diversification and of attracting international expertise and investment».

«The way we were welcomed and the conditions we found for carrying out our work were decisive for the path we have forged in the country».

In the projects entrusted to it, the group intends to «continue to value its Portuguese origins and its roots in Coimbra», a city historically linked to knowledge, science and medicine, by building bridges with Portuguese institutions in the academic, scientific, clinical, technological and business sectors; and by creating new opportunities for internationalisation for national organisations.

«Operating far from Portugal does not distance us from the expertise we know exists in our country. We have contributed to the internationalisation of various Portuguese companies and, whenever they add value to the projects in which we participate, we will continue to do so with pride,» he argued.

He also revealed that they intend to announce, in 2026, new projects, «prepared with great rigour», which he believes will serve as excellent ambassadors for Portugal abroad.

«I would particularly like to highlight the opportunities we are creating for the internationalisation of Portuguese higher education institutions, based on a business model that we believe sets us apart and which we will have the opportunity to present to the public very soon,» he concluded.

The IGHS Group is a business group dedicated to the development, management and operation of healthcare projects at an international level.
