Italy's vicious anti-cyclone is rising again and is set to usher in the Belpaese's sixth summer heatwave with temperature highs up to eight degrees Celsius above seasonal averages, a top forecaster said Wednesday.
    The sixth heat wave is on the way, from Friday, September 4th to Wednesday, September 9th, but temperatures will remain at "only" 37-38°C, according to Lorenzo Tedici, meteorologist and media director for iLMeteo.it, who believes that the only thing that will save us from total thermal collapse is the calendar.
    Since it's now September, the days are shorter: in Milan, we can count on 13 hours and 16 minutes of sunshine, while in Rome, we're stuck with 13 hours and 8 minutes.
    Two hours of merciless solar radiation are missing from the Summer Solstice, and it's precisely these two hours that will act as a shield against the most extreme heatwaves.
    However, from Friday the 4th to Wednesday the 9th, a thermal anomaly is forecast that could push thermometers up to 8°C above the seasonal average.
    Milan is bracing for peaks of 34-35°C, challenging the all-time monthly record of 34.6°C recorded in Brera (city center) on September 1, 2024.
    In Rome, highs will fluctuate between 35 and 36 degrees, putting the monthly record of 35.6°C in its sights (a record shared between September 3, 1982, and the recent September 7, 2024).
    The real danger of this scorcher, however, according to the meteorologist, will not lie in the immediate heat, but in the energy gradually stored over time: the seas will continue to boil, turning into immense fuel tanks for the months to come.
    Meanwhile, in Northern Europe, the nights are getting longer, and signs of the first descents of cold polar air are emerging.
    When an Atlantic low-pressure system inevitably and soon plunges into the heart of the Mediterranean, the collision with this overheated sea surface will be explosive.
    The risk of cloudbursts and extreme autumn events will not be a remote possibility, but an almost certain physical consequence.
