ALGIERS - Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany Johann Wadephul expressed Tuesday his country's keenness to strengthen relations with Algeria and expand bilateral cooperation, particularly in trade, investment, and energy.
In a press statement following an audience granted to him by President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Wadephul recalled that the President's visit to Berlin last July provided an opportunity to exchange views on several issues of mutual interest. He noted that his presence in Algiers is part of the "momentum" building in relations between the two countries.
Wadephul also highlighted his talks with Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs Ahmed Attaf and Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons Mohamed Arkab, as well as his meeting with representatives of German companies operating in Algeria, stating there is "significant potential to deepen bilateral relations, especially in trade, investment, and energy." Noting the growing interest among German companies in expanding trade ties and investment in Algeria, Wadephul addressed energy cooperation, emphasizing that Algeria is a major gas supplier to the European Union and possesses "the necessary assets to advance its energy transition and consolidate its role as a key supplier of green hydrogen." On the political front, the German top diplomat noted that regional and international issues featured prominently in his talks, foremost among them "the situation in the Sahel region, current challenges in the Middle East, and the Russia-Ukraine conflict and its repercussions on global food security." In light of current geopolitical developments, Wadephul highlighted "the need to invest in dialogue and mutual understanding and to strengthen trust-based cooperation," affirming that Germany "prioritizes deepening relations with key partners such as Algeria, both bilaterally and within the European Union (EU) framework." In conclusion, Wadephul expressed gratitude to President Tebboune for "the fruitful exchange of views" and the warm welcome extended during his visit.
He also conveyed his country's solidarity with the Algerian government and people following the recent forest fires that affected several regions of the country, offering his heartfelt condolences to the victims' families.
