Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Q2 GDP grew 2.5% YoY - Statistics Portugal

Lisbon, Aug. 31, 2026 (Lusa) - The Portuguese economy grew by 2.5% year-on-year in the second quarter and by 0.8% quarter-on-quarter, Statistics Portugal (INE) confirmed on Monday.

The economy picked up pace between April and June, both compared with the same period in 2025 and compared with the previous three quarters of 2026.

The year-on-year change in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was 2.5% in the second quarter of 2026, a rate 0.1 percentage points (p.p.) higher than that observed in the previous quarter.

According to the statistics office, the negative contribution of net external demand to the year-on-year change in GDP narrowed in the second quarter, with stronger growth in exports more than offsetting the acceleration in imports.

On the other hand, the positive contribution from domestic demand declined, reflecting mainly the slowdown in investment.

In quarterly terms, GDP growth accelerated to 0.8%, having risen by 0.1% in the previous quarter.

«The contribution from net external demand was decisive for this development, shifting from -2.0 p.p. to +0.7 p.p., as a result of the acceleration in exports of goods and services and the slowdown in imports of goods and services,» explains INE.

The contribution from domestic demand, in turn, fell due to a decline in investment.

These figures confirm the flash estimate released by INE at the end of July.
