Fátima, Portugal, Aug. 31, 2026 (Lusa) - Portugal's criminal investigation police agency (PJ) revealed on Monday that investigators are still determining the cause of the fire that claimed the life of a Spanish tourist at a hotel in Fátima in the early hours of this morning.

«We are still determining the cause of the fire,» a source from the PJ's Leiria Criminal Investigation Department told the Lusa news agency.

According to the same source, «the site has been inspected and evidence collected, and an assessment will be carried out».

A Spanish tourist died in the early hours of this morning in a fire at a hotel in the town of Fátima, which led to the evacuation of 53 people from the premises, Civil Protection sources told the Lusa news agency.

According to a source from the Fátima Volunteer Fire Brigade, the fatality was a person in their 60s who was part of a group of Spanish nationals staying at the hotel.

«The fire was confined to the room,» the same source added.

According to the Médio Tejo Sub-regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command, the authorities received the fire alert at 12:39 a.m., and firefighters extinguished the fire at 1:06 a.m.

Resources from the Fátima and Ourém volunteer fire brigades, the National Institute of Medical Emergency, the National Republican Guard and Portugal's PJ, were dispatched to the scene, with 28 personnel and 10 vehicles.

The fire necessitated the evacuation of 53 people from the hotel, the Sub-regional Command reported.
