Fátima, Portugal, Aug. 31, 2026 (Lusa) - A Spanish tourist died in the early hours of Monday morning in a fire at a hotel in the town of Fátima, which led to the evacuation of 53 people from the premises, Civil Protection sources told the Lusa news agency.

According to a source from the Fátima Volunteer Fire Brigade, the fatality was a person aged around 60 who was part of a group of Spanish nationals staying at the hotel.

«The fire was confined to the room,» the same source added.

According to the Médio Tejo Sub-regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command, the authorities received the fire alert at 12:39 a.m., and firefighters extinguished the fire at 1:06 a.m.

Resources from the Fátima and Ourém volunteer fire brigades, the National Institute of Medical Emergency, the National Republican Guard and the Judicial Police were dispatched to the scene, comprising 28 personnel and 10 vehicles.

The fire led to the evacuation of 53 people from the hotel, the Sub-regional Command reported.

The authorities are investigating the causes of the fire.
