Lisbon, Aug. 20, 2026 (Lusa) - The number of couples in which both partners are unemployed fell by 10.2% in July compared with the same period last year, and remained stable compared with June, totalling 4,181, according to figures released by the IEFP on Thursday.
«Of the total number of unemployed people who are married or in a civil partnership, 8,362 (7.9 %) are also recorded as having a spouse who is registered as unemployed with the employment service, totalling 4,181 unemployed couples, in July 2026, representing a decrease of 10.2% compared with the same period last year», according to the report from the Institute for Employment and Vocational Training (IEFP).
In a month-on-month comparison, however, the number of couples in which both partners are unemployed remained stable, having declined consecutively since February.
For several years now, couples in this situation of double unemployment have been entitled to a 10% increase in their unemployment benefit when they have dependants.
The IEFP also reported that the number of unemployed people registered with employment services on the mainland stood at 260,408 at the end of July, representing a year-on-year decline of 8.1% but an increase of 1.8% from the previous month.
