Lisbon, Aug. 19, 2026 (Lusa) - The food basket comprising 63 essential items monitored by Deco Proteste rose again by €1.48 last week, reaching €253.55, the consumer protection association reported on Wednesday.
After falling by €1.53 the previous week (€252.07), «the food basket monitored by Deco Proteste, a consumer protection organisation, costs €253.55 this week, representing an increase of around €1.48», according to the information released.
The food basket includes meat, frozen foods, fruit and vegetables, dairy products, groceries and fish.
Among others, it includes turkey, chicken, horse mackerel, hake, onions, potatoes, carrots, bananas, apples, oranges, rice, spaghetti, sugar, ham, milk, cheese and butter.
Between 12 August and 19 August, tuna in vegetable oil rose by 16% to €1.59, cake flour rose by 10% to €1.83 and butter beans rose by 10% to €1.50 – these were the products with the highest price increases.
At the start of the year, to buy the same basket of 63 products, consumers spent €11.73 less (a reduction of 4.85%) According to Deco Proteste, a year ago consumers could purchase exactly the same products for €12.25 less (a reduction of 5.08%) At the start of 2022, they could spend €65.85 less (a difference of 35.08%).
Compared with last year, the biggest price rises were seen in products such as savoy cabbage (up 24%, currently costing €1.94 per kilogramme), large cod (up 24%, currently costing €19.56 per kilogramme), and sea bass (up 22%, currently costing €10.06 per kilogramme).
Since 5 January 2022, the largest percentage increases have been in beef for stewing (up 119% to €12.76 per kilogramme), savoy cabbage (up 95% to €1.94) and large cod (up 85% to €19.56 per kilogramme).
