Praia, July 22, 2026 (Lusa) – Portugal is to set up a €100 million credit line for companies investing in Cabo Verde, President António José Seguro announced on Tuesday following a meeting with his counterpart, José Maria Neves.
«The Portuguese Government is finalising a €100 million credit line to support investment by Portuguese companies in Cabo Verde,» said Seguro at the Presidential Palace in Praia, during a press conference with Cabo Verde's head of state.
The meeting between the two leaders marked the start of Seguro's first state visit to the archipelago, which runs until Thursday.
Seguro noted that, according to information from the prime minister, Luís Montenegro, the process of structuring the credit line is «in its final stages, relating to technical aspects».
«This is good news that seals the strong relationship between Cabo Verde and Portugal,» he added.
José Maria Neves said that the credit line would be «yet another significant milestone» in relations between the two countries.
«We must reimagine the agenda and reach new heights» of cooperation in health, education and the economy, amongst other sectors, he added, noting that the two countries share many aspects that «cannot be quantified» – whether these be life-saving medical transfers in the health sector or moments of celebration, such as during the last World Cup.
«Friendship cannot be quantified,» added António José Seguro, «and it is what endures.» Bilateral cooperation is at an «excellent» level, but can be further «diversified and deepened», he added, pointing to new technologies and the oceans.
Alongside the meeting between the two heads of state and the souvenirs they exchanged, Seguro presented José Maria Neves with a porcelain blue shark, alluding to the visibility the national team has gained at the 2026 World Cup.
«I hope you experience all the grandeur of that participation» during your visit to the archipelago, said José Maria Neves.
Both also exchanged honours: Cabo Verde's President was the first head of state to receive the Grand Collar of the Order of Camões, for his work in promoting the language and cooperation between the two countries.
Seguro received the First Class decoration of the Order of Amílcar Cabral, the country's highest honour.
Economic relations, bilateral cooperation and ocean management are key themes on the agenda for the Portuguese President's visit to the archipelago.
A Cape Verde–Portugal economic forum is scheduled for Wednesday in the central bank's auditorium.
On Thursday, Seguro will take part in the opening session of the 5th International Conference of the Decade of the Ocean, dedicated to the theme ‘Blue Economy: Sustainable Pathways', on the island of Boa Vista.
