Maputo, July 14, 2026 (Lusa) - The president of Mozambique, Daniel Chapo, begins a four-day official visit to Portugal on Tuesday, at the invitation of his Portuguese counterpart, to strengthen bilateral cooperation and promote investment opportunities in Mozambique; this is his third visit since December.
According to a statement from the Office of the President, the visit will take place between 14 and 17 July, as part of efforts to strengthen the historic ties of friendship, solidarity and cooperation between Mozambique and Portugal.
During the visit, Daniel Chapo will hold working meetings with the president of Portugal, António José Seguro, and the prime minister, Luís Montenegro, amongst other Portuguese officials, with a view to deepening bilateral cooperation in areas of common interest and consolidating the strategic partnership between the two countries.
President Chapo will also take part on Wednesday as a guest of honour in the opening session of the ninth edition of the EurAfrican Forum, organised by the Portuguese Diaspora Council, under the theme “Africa on the Rise: Prosperity through Global Cooperation”.
According to the Mozambican Presidency, Daniel Chapo’s address at the meeting is part of efforts to promote dialogue among Africa, Europe and other international partners on issues related to investment, sustainable development and economic integration.
The statement adds that the visit is an opportunity to strengthen political, economic and business cooperation between Mozambique and Portugal, as well as to showcase the country’s economic potential to investors and international partners.
During his visit to Portugal, Daniel Chapo will be accompanied by the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Maria Manuela dos Santos Lucas, the Minister for Transport and Logistics, João Jorge Matlombe, as well as officials from the Presidency of the Republic and other state institutions.
The president of Mozambique stated on 9 December in Porto that Portugal is a “strategic and privileged partner” in Mozambique’s economic development, challenging Portuguese businesspeople to invest in the country and highlighting the reforms currently underway.
“Portugal is indisputably a privileged strategic partner of Mozambique,” said the Head of State at the opening of the Portugal-Mozambique Business Forum, which brought together around 600 business leaders from both countries at the Palácio da Bolsa in Porto, on the sidelines of the sixth bilateral summit.
He added that the relationship between the two countries “has deep historical roots, spanning centuries of coexistence, consolidated by a shared language, and strengthened by human and business ties that span generations”.
“A relationship that has faced challenges, but which has always managed to renew itself, adapting to the times, needs and ambitions at every stage of our history,” said Chapo, emphasising that the two countries understand one another “without the need for translation”.
He emphasised that Portugal is “a strategic partner” in Mozambique’s development, expressing the hope that Portuguese companies will be “at the forefront of the transformations” underway in the country.
On 9 March, the Head of State was in Lisbon to attend the inauguration ceremony of the new president of Portugal, António José Seguro.
