Lisbon, July 10, jul 2026 (Lusa) - The Portuguese prime minister has handed over the revolver presented to him by the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, during the NATO summit to the PSP for forensic analysis, a source from Luís Montenegro’s office told Lusa.
When he “became aware of the gift he had received” – which had been distributed to all heads of state and government during the NATO summit in Ankara – the prime minister handed the revolver over “to the Personal Security Corps, which transported it to Portugal”, the same source added.
The weapon is now at the PSP’s Weapons and Explosives Department, “where the necessary forensic analysis will be carried out to determine the applicable legal provisions”, according to information from the Prime Minister’s office.
Keir Starmer, the British prime minister, was the first to speak about Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s gift – a revolver engraved with each leader’s name and six bullets – during the flight back to London.
The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the President of the European Council, António Costa, have already announced that they will “store the weapons securely”.
“This morning I discovered that he had misled us, selling us scrap metal instead of something of value,” commented Zoran Milanovic, President of Croatia, today.
