Lusa - Business News - Portugal: TAP allows passengers to Venezuela to change their flights

Lisbon, June 25, 2026 (Lusa) - TAP Air Portugal has announced that customers with tickets for flights to and from Caracas up to 30 July can change their travel arrangements, adding that the airline’s crew in the Venezuelan capital are “well and safe” following the earthquakes.

According to information published on its website, “all passengers with tickets issued up to 24 June for flights to and from the Venezuelan capital scheduled to take place up to 30 July may change their travel dates to flights taking place within the validity period of their tickets”.

In an internal message to which Lusa had access, signed by the chief executive, Luís Rodrigues, and the director responsible for operations, Mário Chaves, TAP expresses “solidarity with Venezuela, with the Venezuelan people, with the entire Portuguese community residing in that country, and with all those affected by the tragic events”, offering “condolences for all the victims”.

In the same internal message, TAP’s management states that some members of the company’s team in Venezuela have suffered property damage but are, however, physically unharmed.

An official source at the company also confirmed to Lusa that a TAP crew of 11 people is stranded in Caracas, the Venezuelan capital, due to the strong earthquakes that struck the country on Wednesday night.

The crew were at their hotel when the earthquakes struck. Due to damage to that hotel, the crew members moved to another hotel, and one crew member sustained minor injuries.

In the internal message, TAP’s management stated that the crew “are well and safe”, staying at a hotel, and that the airline is in constant contact with its teams in Venezuela and with the local authorities to provide support, monitor the situation and assess the circumstances.

“TAP aircraft were outside Venezuela at the time,” the internal message also states.

The airline has indicated that it will update all information whenever necessary.

The resumption of normal flight operations for TAP and other airlines awaits confirmation from the relevant local authorities.

Two major earthquakes struck Venezuela on Wednesday, causing at least 164 deaths and more than 900 injuries, according to the provisional official toll.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the first earthquake, measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale, struck about 200 kilometres from Caracas, and a second, measuring 7.5, followed, along with about 20 aftershocks.

Dozens of buildings collapsed or sustained severe damage in the La Guaira region, north of Caracas, one of the worst-affected areas.

The Venezuelan authorities have declared a state of emergency.

Venezuela is home to one of the largest communities of Portuguese emigrants and people of Portuguese descent in the world.

At least five Portuguese nationals, four of whom are from the same family, are missing in La Guaira, according to the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
