Lusa - Business News - Portugal: EDP maintains focus on US, see wind potential with next administration

Lisbon, June 25, 2026 (Lusa) — EDP’s chief executive confirmed on Thursday that the company remains committed to the United States, focusing on solar and batteries, whilst acknowledging the potential for further wind power from 2028 onwards, under a new administration.

Asked about EDP Renewables’ strategy in the United States, against the backdrop of the current Trump administration’s focus on energy sources other than offshore wind power, Miguel Stilwell d’Andrade said that the company had taken the investment decision “with full knowledge of the facts”.

“When we made that decision to invest, we were aware of the facts,” said Miguel Stilwell d’Andrade, at a meeting with journalists to mark EDP’s 50th anniversary.

“The current focus excludes investment in offshore wind, favouring solar and batteries in the United States,” he added.

According to the chief executive, “for now, solar and batteries will continue”, as these are areas that have already been “a major driver of growth” for the group in recent years.

Stilwell d’Andrade acknowledged that, from 2028 onwards, under a new administration, there may be “potential” for further investment in wind power, depending on regulatory and political conditions.

Regarding onshore wind power, EDP’s chief executive said the group is being “quite cautious” due to licensing issues.

“We want to be absolutely certain that we have all the necessary licences before making an investment decision,” he stated.

“We aim to ensure that we can proceed smoothly with our investment once the decision is made,” he added.

On the subject of offshore wind power, he pointed out that EDP had three projects in the United States, having already recouped its investment in two of them, whilst the third remains under negotiation.

“They cannot keep the money we paid at the auction and then not let us build. That is what seems unreasonable,” he said.

He also emphasised that EDP's growth in the United States, despite having a Chinese shareholder, shows the company has struck “the necessary balance” in a more challenging geopolitical context.

EDP’s main shareholder is China Three Gorges, with 22.20% of the share capital, followed by BlackRock, with 8.35%, and Oppidum Capital, with 6.82%, according to the shareholder structure available on the electricity company’s website.
