Lisbon, June 17, 2026 (Lusa) - The government is launching the public consultation on Wednesday on the Green Map, which identifies the areas of the country most suitable for the development of renewable energy projects, with the aim of speeding up the licensing processes.
The Ministry of the Environment and Energy explained in a statement that the definition of the so-called renewable energy acceleration zones resulted from work carried out by an independent team coordinated by Maria do Rosário Partidário, who chaired the technical committee for the new Lisbon airport, based on criteria of environmental sensitivity, energy potential, land-use planning and proximity to electricity grids.
The aim is to produce a map showing preferred siting zones, where the licensing of renewable energy projects is streamlined, providing greater predictability for investors and closer coordination with local authorities and communities.
“The Green Map is an essential tool for accelerating the energy transition in Portugal. It ensures simpler rules, greater predictability and greater involvement of local communities, striking a balance between energy, the environment and the territory,” said Minister Maria da Graça Carvalho, as quoted in the statement.
The public consultation is taking place on the participa.pt platform and is open to citizens, local authorities, environmental organisations and developers.
