Dili, June 17, 2026 (Lusa) - The president of Timor-Leste, José Ramos-Horta, suggested on Wednesday that the government should provide incentives to the productive sectors to help tackle the rising cost of living, while keeping the price of administrative services stable.
“I suggest that the government provide incentives to productive sectors, particularly to business owners, public transport and food production, with the aim of helping the population cope with the rising cost of living,” said Ramos-Horta.
The president was speaking at Dili airport after returning from a working visit to Malaysia, and when asked by journalists about the implementation of the new administrative charges by the National Directorate of Land Transport (DNTT).
Ramos-Horta stated that government officials usually choose opportune moments to raise taxes or charges.
“I still do not fully understand the reasons behind the policy that led to the decision to increase transport administrative fees at a time when the population is facing a difficult economic situation,” he said.
Whilst acknowledging that this is not the right time to increase fees, the president emphasised that he respects the powers of the government and the authorities responsible for formulating public policy.
Timorese MPs and various sectors of society have expressed strong concern over the implementation of the new administrative fees by the National Directorate of Land Transport.
In Malaysia, José Ramos-Horta took part in the launch of a book on Timor-Leste, gave lectures and attended a lunch with the Malaysian prime minister, Anwar Ibrahim.
