Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Infrastructure manager receives €470M, about 87% of RRP funds

Aljustrel, Portugal, June 16, 2026 (Lusa) – Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) has received “around €470 million” in European funds from the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP), representing 87% of the total allocation earmarked for the company under this programme.

Following the unprecedented crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, Portugal’s recovery and resilience plan (RRP) has responded to the urgent need to foster a strong recovery, while making Portugal’s economy and society more resilient and future-ready.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the company noted that the RRP “aims to strengthen the country’s social, economic and territorial resilience, whilst accelerating the digital and climate transitions”.

In this context, IP “has ensured the sound implementation of the projects assigned to it, playing a key role in the delivery of the national RRP”, it said.

The company “has, to date, received around €470 million in European funds under the RRP”, which “corresponds to 87% of the total amount earmarked for the projects carried out by IP”.

This update on RRP funding is set out in a press release in which IP also announced the completion and opening to traffic of the bypass for National Road 263 (EN263) in Aljustrel, in the district of Beja.

The project was inaugurated this morning by the prime minister, Luís Montenegro, who subsequently attended the presentation of a €400 million investment that Almina, the concessionaire of the Aljustrel mine, is set to make in that mining complex.

The Aljustrel bypass is 4.4 kilometres long and involved an investment of €8.5 million funded by the RRP, the IP explained.

In its statement, Infraestruturas de Portugal argued that its investments “contribute to building a more competitive and cohesive country, with a strong focus on improving access to Business Parks, developing cross-border links and completing missing connections”.

“The projects cover a wide geographical area, involving various regions of the country and promoting the integration and development of inland areas,” it said.

To ensure that the financial implementation set out under the RRP has been achieved, “the public entity has exceeded all the milestones set out in the funding agreements signed under Component 7 – Infrastructure and Component 15 – Sustainable Mobility”, the statement added.

Furthermore, it continued, it has already met “two investment targets set out in the respective financing contracts”.

“Under Component 7 of the RRP, [the EN263 bypass] is the 18th project completed by IP, with the remaining works currently in full progress, the majority of which are at an advanced stage of completion”, the company added.

As for the projects under Component 15, dedicated to the rail sector, “of particular note is the design and construction contract forming part of the Rail Transport Digitalisation project, which is currently underway”.

At the ceremony marking the opening of the EN263 bypass to road traffic, the Mayor of Aljustrel, Fernando Ruas, stated that the new road would provide “greater safety for the town centre” and return it “to the people, which would not have been possible whilst heavy goods vehicles were still required to pass through it daily”.
