TIRANA, June 7 /ATA/ Korça was transformed last night into a capital of colour, imagination, and collective joy, officially opening the 2026 summer tourism season through the 19th edition of the International Carnival Festival, while celebrations continue today for local residents and hundreds of visitors who have chosen to spend the weekend in the city of serenades.
The streets of the city of serenades were filled with a magical atmosphere lasting from morning until late at night, attracting thousands of local residents as well as domestic and international tourists.
The festivities began with a morning parade, while the lively atmosphere of a city welcoming numerous visitors was further enriched by a variety of activities throughout the day.
The first artistic groups performed along the pedestrian area and “Republika” Boulevard.
The initial rhythms of music and the bold masks immediately attracted the attention of visitors, who filled cafés and main streets to enjoy the first introductory parade.
The afternoon was dedicated to the younger generation. From 17:00 to 20:00, the city’s public spaces were transformed into an oasis of entertainment. The children’s stage featured music, interactive games, and the highly anticipated face painting activity, during which hundreds of children were transformed into their favourite characters.
The Grand Carnival Parade transformed the city into a nighttime stage of spectacle.
It drew thousands of spectators who lined the route from Lëndina e Lotëve to the main boulevard. This year’s edition featured not only local troupes but also international groups from neighbouring countries, with the Arbëreshë as honoured guests, showcasing their unique costumes and traditions.
Creative costumes, allegory, satire, and perfectly coordinated choreography turned the city into an open-air stage of performance.
After 20:30, the celebrations moved to the Old Bazaar of Korça. Amid the lights of the characteristic bazaar, live music and the energy of performing groups kept the atmosphere alive until midnight, marking an excellent start to Korça’s rich summer cultural calendar.
