ANSA - Italy's annual inflation rate climbed to 2.7% in April says Istat

Energy and food price hikes behind the rise says statistics agency

Italy's annual inflation rate shot up to 2.7% in April 2026, compared to 1.7% in March, amid the energy-price shock linked to the Iran war, Istat on Friday.
The national statistics agency said its consumer price index was up 1.1% in month-on-month terms.
"The acceleration of inflation was mainly due to the dynamics of prices of non-regulated energy products (from -2.0% to +9.6%), of regulated energy products (from -1.6% to +5.3%) and of unprocessed food (from +4.7% to +5.9%)," Istat said.
The figures were slightly lower than the increases of 2.8% year-on-year and 1.2% month-on-month that Istat had given in its preliminary estimates.
Istat said its 'shopping trolley' index of the prices of food, household goods, and personal care products rose by 2.3% in April, up from 2.2% in March.
It said core inflation - excluding energy and fresh food - dropped from 1.9% to 1.6%.
