Lusa - Business News - Angola: UN Global Compact for sustainable business kicks off with 65 members

Luanda, May 11, 2026 (Lusa) - The Angolan network of the United Nations (UN) Global Compact, which was officially launched in Luanda on Monday, includes 65 participating companies, according to its executive director for Angola, Eliana Santos.

The network aims to strengthen sustainable business practices and support organisations in adopting international standards of sustainability, transparency and good governance, in accordance with principles aligned with the areas of human rights, labour, the environment and the fight against corruption.

Santos said that work on the initiative began four years ago with a market survey of Angolan companies active in the field of sustainability.

“Initially, our strategy was to look at the financial sector, where our companies have the greatest interest. At present, there are 65 companies committed to the United Nations Global Compact,” she said.

Annually, companies will have to report their progress through a dedicated platform, she said, adding that by joining the network, companies become more sustainable, conduct business with greater responsibility and are more attuned to the required international standards.

Created by the United Nations, the Global Compact currently brings together more than 25,000 participants across over 100 countries and is regarded as the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative.

Sanda Ojiambo, UN assistant Secretary-General and CEO of the UN Global Compact, said that there are 65 networks worldwide, ten of which are in Africa, and the Angolan network will join more than a thousand companies across the African continent.

According to a statement from the Global Compact, the new network’s priorities include attracting companies to join, launching initiatives aligned with national priorities and the principles of the Global Compact.

The organisation also aims to promote capacity-building programmes and cooperation among Portuguese-language countries through partnerships with networks in Brazil, Portugal and Mozambique.
