Macau, China, 28 April 2026 (Lusa) - Macau’s Tourism Affairs Bureau (DST) predicted on Tuesday that the region will welcome up to 1.1 million visitors during the Labour Day holidays.
The acting head of the DST’s Public Relations Division, Ieong Un Man, predicted an average of between 210,000 and 220,000 tourists per day – “similar to last year’s figures” – during the so-called Golden Week, between 1 and 5 May.
This year, Labour Day holidays in mainland China last five days.
The DST is actively preparing across all fronts to receive visitors to ensure the quality of tourism services.
Macau’s Public Security Police (PSP) estimated that 3.6 to 3.7 million people will cross the region’s borders during the holiday period, with a peak of 850,000 people expected on May 2.
Police spokesperson Lai In Hong, said the PSP has drawn up a series of policing, traffic and immigration plans, continuously optimising measures to safeguard public order and safety in Macau.
According to the latest estimate by the government, Macau has a population of 686,600.
The city recorded more than 11.2 million visitors in Q1, up 13.7% from the same period in 2025 and a record high for the first quarter of any year.
Hong Kong’s Immigration Department said on Monday that around six million people are expected to cross the borders of the neighbouring Chinese region during the upcoming Golden Week holiday, including 980,000 tourists from mainland China.
Golden Weeks are closely watched as indicators of China’s economic activity, reflecting efforts to boost consumption and services as drivers of domestic demand, which has yet to fully recover from the pandemic.
During the previous Golden Week, the nine-day Lunar New Year holiday period, the largest annual human migration in the world, Macau received nearly 1.6 million visitors.
