Lusa - Business News - Portugal: State broadcaster Africa service a community project – minister

Lisbon, April 1, 2026 (Lusa) - The cabinet office minister stated on Wednesday that state broadcaster, RTP Africa "is a community project" and emphasised that Portugal has never had so many Portuguese-speaking citizens from overseas living in the country and that they are a shining example of integration.

António Leitão Amaro was speaking at the celebration of RTP África’s 30th anniversary, which is taking place at the Gulbenkian foundation in Lisbon.

RTP África “is a community project”, the minister emphasised, noting that it is “about sharing, about building a community”.

“This is a space; RTP África is a space for brothers and sisters, a space for dialogue, for sharing, for building ideas,” the minister emphasised, adding that “it is a community that is becoming increasingly integrated, both there and here”.

Indeed, “we have never had so many Portuguese-speaking citizens from overseas living in Portugal, and they are a shining example of successful integration, he noted.

“Over the decades, but particularly in recent years, that number has risen significantly and they are a model of success,” emphasised António Leitão Amaro.

And because of this, citizenship, various residence rights and the enjoyment of numerous other benefits, including access to the healthcare system, hold a desirable position that must be maintained, he noted.

"We also need this sense of community, because we need to accelerate, assist, facilitate and cement the integration of so many who sought us out and whom we have welcomed," he continued.

“It must be a platform run from Lisbon, but it must be built together so that it can be heard and shared in Portugal, certainly, where so many Portuguese people and citizens of Portuguese Language Countries live who want to share in and experience this community through RTP África,” he said.

Therefore, “this project to expand the reach and audience is just as important for Portugal, but it is a project for Africa and for these countries”.
