Maputo, March 30, 2026 (Lusa) - The death toll from the current rainy season in Mozambique has risen to 306, with 1.05 million people affected since October, according to the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD).
INGD database information updated on Monday morning showed two more deaths in recent days. The rainy season, which lasts until the end of April, has affected over one million people (25,000 more than the previous balance) or around 245,000 families.
Records show 17 people missing and 351 injured.
January floods caused at least 43 deaths, 147 injuries, and nine missing persons, affecting 715,803 people overall. Southern areas have recorded a new wave of flooding in recent days.
Cyclone Gezani killed four people and affected 9,040 others when it passed through Inhambane province on 13 and 14 February, INGD data showed.
In total, the rainy season has partially destroyed 24,229 houses, completely destroyed 11,996, and flooded 209,219.
The weather affected 304 health units, 109 places of worship, and 764 schools in less than six months.
INGD data show that farmers lost 316,267 hectares of agricultural land, affecting 371,320 people, while 531,116 animals died, including cattle, goats, and poultry.
The rains affected 9,522 kilometres of roads, 51 bridges, and 237 culverts.
Since October, the institute has opened 197 accommodation centres which housed 139,461 people. At least 29 centres remain active for 9,751 people, and teams rescued 7,214 others during the season.
