Maputo, March 23, 2026 (Lusa) - The presidents of Mozambique and Ukraine want to maintain "regular contacts" and boost initiatives to strengthen cooperation between the two countries, Mozambique's presidency announced on Monday in a statement following a phone call between the two leaders.

"The two heads of state agreed to maintain regular contacts and boost initiatives that contribute to strengthening cooperation between Mozambique and Ukraine," a statement from the presidency sent to the media said.

Mozambique’s president, Daniel Chapo, and Ukraine's president, Volodymyr Zelensky, held a phone conversation on Monday. They exchanged views on cooperation opportunities in several sectors of common interest, especially agriculture, trade, energy, and technical-vocational training, expressing a desire to explore "concrete mechanisms for deepening these ties".

"President Zelensky reaffirmed Ukraine's interest in strengthening cooperation ties with Mozambique, while President Chapo reiterated the country's openness and availability to deepen bilateral relations for the mutual benefit of both peoples," the presidency said.

According to the statement, the heads of state also shared concerns about challenges to peace, global security, and their impacts on developing economies.

They "reiterated the importance of dialogue, diplomacy and respect for international law as fundamental pillars for the peaceful resolution of conflicts," the presidency concluded.
