Lusa - Business News - Mozambique: Radio frequency shut down over air traffic interference

Maputo, March 22, 2026 (Lusa) - Mozambique has temporarily shut down a Radio France station frequency after interference in Maputo's aeronautical communications on Friday affected a critical air traffic control service.

According to a statement issued on Sunday by the National Communications Institute of Mozambique (INCM), the regulator for the postal and telecommunications sectors, the interference was detected on the 118.1 MHz frequency. This frequency is used for aeronautical communications, which are essential for operational safety.

"A broadcasting station operating on the frequency 105 MHz (...) was identified as a potential source of interference, and its temporary shutdown was carried out as a preventive measure," the INCM said.

Following an alert from Aeroportos de Moçambique (Airports of Mozambique), INCM technical teams were mobilised to investigate the problem. They identified a Radio France broadcasting station operating on the 105 MHz frequency as a potential source.

The regulator said the intervention stopped the interference and normalised aeronautical communications. Technical work continues to determine the causes and implement corrective measures.

The INCM said it would continue to monitor the case, highlighting its commitment to protecting aeronautical communications and the integrity of the country's radio spectrum.
