Chaves, Portugal, March 18, 2026 (Lusa) - A Spanish aluminium manufacturer is to invest €100 million in building a factory in the municipality of Chaves, where it expects to create 400 jobs in 2027, the local council announced on Wednesday.
The municipality in the northern Vila Real district said in a statement that the investment by the Spanish multinational Cortizo represents "one of the largest business projects ever carried out in the municipality".
It explained that the future factory is being installed in the Chaves Business Park, in an area of around 30 hectares, where an industrial complex of around 80,000 square metres dedicated to aluminium processing will be built.
The local authority said the unit should start operations at the end of 2027 and could create between 400 and 450 direct jobs, contributing "significantly to the local economy".
"This investment is the result of institutional cooperation between the council and the company, which began in 2020 and which, over the last few years, has made it possible to bring together the necessary conditions for the project to be carried out," added the council, led by the Socialist Nuno Vaz.
The planned investment is around €100 million, and the project has been classified as a Project of National Interest (PIN), meaning it benefits from specific incentives and support mechanisms.
Chaves council added that "the new factory will be the group's most modern, integrating advanced technology and automated production systems, covering the entire aluminium processing cycle, from extrusion to final finishes".
In addition to creating skilled jobs, it anticipates that the "project should have a significant impact on boosting the local and regional economic fabric, reinforcing the territory's business attractiveness and encouraging new companies to set up in the Alto Tâmega region".
Founded more than five decades ago in Galicia, Cortizo is dedicated to the production of aluminium and PVC systems for architecture and industry and has a presence in several European countries.
