CNA - Government employment at 55,331 in February, slight increase of 0.1%

Total government employment reached 55,331 persons in February, recording a slight increase of 35 persons or 0.1% compared with the same month of 2025, according to public sector employment data released by the Statistical Service of Cyprus.

Employment in the Public Service decreased by 0.9%, falling to 22,977 persons from 23,197 in February 2025. A decline of 0.5% was also recorded in the Security Forces, where personnel amounted to 13,772. By contrast, employment in the Educational Service increased by 1.8%, with the number of employees reaching 18,582.

By category of personnel across the government, the largest increase was recorded among Employees with Indefinite Duration Contracts, which rose by 1.6% year-on-year to 9,626 persons. In contrast, Employees with Fixed-Term Contracts recorded the largest decrease, falling by 0.9% to 6,283 persons.

The largest percentage increase was observed among Employees with Indefinite Duration Contracts in the Educational Service, which rose by 25.2% to 1,184 persons. The largest percentage decrease was recorded among Fixed-Term Contract employees in the Security Forces, which dropped by 85.4% to 39 persons from 268 in February 2025.

It is noted that this significant decrease is mainly due to the completion and non-renewal of certain fixed-term contracts in July 2025.

For the period January–February 2026, the average total government employment increased by 0.3% compared with the corresponding period of 2025.
