Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Trains halted due to floods, river Tagus ferries halted by rough sea

Lisbon, Feb. 5, 2026 (Lusa) - Rail traffic on Portugal's main Lisbon-Porto railway line, on the section between Castanheira do Ribatejo and Alverca, in the region of Vila Franca de Xira, Lisbon, was halted on Thursday at 6 a.m. due to flooding, according to the passenger train operator, CP - Comboios de Portugal.

Train services on this main Northern Line were already suspended due to flooding in the Alfarelos area (Coimbra) for long-distance trains, with the interruption also affecting the Beira Alta Line and the Alfarelos Branch Line (which connects the stations of Alfarelos, on the Northern Line, and Bifurcação de Lares, on the Western Line).

On the Cascais Line, in the district of Lisbon, traffic between Algés and Oeiras was running on a single track at 6:00 a.m. due to the weather conditions.

CP reports that urban services in Coimbra remain suspended, as do regional services between Entroncamento and Coimbra B.

Rail traffic also remains suspended due to bad weather on the Douro Line between Régua and Pocinho, on the Western Line and on the Southern Line between Ermidas do Sado and Grândola, with long-distance services being transferred to road transport.

Fertagus commuter train services, which connect Lisbon and Setubal on the south bank of the river Tagus, were restricted in the early hours of the morning due to strong winds and were operating on a heavy itinerary, i.e. only one train at a time crossing the 25 April Bridge.

However, in a statement at 06:18, the company said that traffic on the 25 de Abril Bridge had returned to normal due to a decrease in wind intensity.

The Leonardo depression is crossing the mainland with persistent and sometimes heavy rain and wind, and warnings have been issued by the national meteorological institute (IPMA).

Eleven people have died in Portugal since last week as a result of the Kristin and Leonardo depressions, which have also caused several hundred injuries and displaced people.

The total or partial destruction of homes, businesses and equipment, the fall of trees and structures, the closure of roads, schools and transport services, and the cutting off of power, water and communications are the main material consequences of the storm.

Leiria, Coimbra and Santarém are the regions with the most damage.

The government has declared a state of emergency until next Sunday for 68 districts and announced a package of support measures worth up to €2.5 billion.

Meanwhile, ferry services across the river Tagus in Lisbon operated by Transtejo between Cacilhas and Cais do Sodré stations have been suspended due to very adverse weather and sea conditions, according to information on the company's website.

"Due to very adverse weather and sea conditions, the transport service is temporarily suspended on this river connection," Transtejo said in an update at 05:48 on Thursday morning.

According to the company, it is not possible, for the time being, to predict when regular service will resume between the two river ports in the districts of Almada and Lisbon.

Later, Transtejo announced that ferry services between Trafaria, Porto Brandão, on the south bank and Belém, on the north bank of the river Tagus has been halted due to very adverse weather and sea conditions.

Information from the company, published on its website at 7:04 a.m., indicates that the service is temporarily suspended and that it is not possible to predict when regular service will resume between these river ports.

Transtejo is responsible for connections between Seixal, Montijo, Cacilhas, and Trafaria/Porto Brandão, in the region of Setúbal, and Lisbon.

Portugal is being affected by the passage of the Leonardo depression, with persistent and sometimes heavy rain.

Lisbon was under an orange rain warning until 6 a.m. today, according to the Portuguese meteorological institute, as were Évora, Setúbal, Santarém, Beja, and Portalegre.

The regions of Porto, Faro, Setúbal, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Beja, Aveiro, Coimbra and Braga remain under an orange warning for rough seas until 6:00 pm on Friday, due to the forecast of waves that could "reach 12 to 13 metres in height".
