Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Volunteers serve more than 224,000 meals to Porto homeless last year




Porto, April.24,2024(Lusa)- Fifteen voluntary organisations delivered more than 224,000 meals to homeless people in Porto last year, the result of an investment of €1.17 million, one of the organisations said on Wednesday.
In a statement, Paróquia Senhora da Conceição Porto explains that 224,184 meals were served in the city in 2023, based on data from 15 voluntary organisations that are part of axis 6 (volunteering) of NPISA - Núcleo de Planeamento e Intervenção Sem Abrigo.
The municipal support network for homeless people includes 63 organisations in the city and is divided into six areas of action: social support, employment and training, housing, participation and citizenship, health and volunteering.
Last year, around 46,000 volunteers from the 15 organisations put in 16,385 hours of work on rounds and 1,392 outings.
4,415 volunteers were also mobilised, 93 of whom were hired full-time.
The meals served represent an investment of €1.17 million, with the price per meal being €5.20, an increase compared to 2022, when the price per meal was €4.90.
In addition to the meals served by the organisations, in the city of Porto the three solidarity restaurants, funded by the municipality, served 170,000 meals, the result of an investment of more than €760,000.
All in all, 394,184 meals were served to homeless people in Porto, as a result of an investment of over €1.9 million.
