Lusa - Business News - Portugal: TAP crew strike main points

Lisbon,Dec.7,2022(Lusa)-TAP crew members have decided to maintain their strike on Thursday and Friday, called by the National Civil Aviation Flight Staff Union (SNPVAC), and approved scheduling at least five days of stoppage until 31 January.
In the motion voted on at the general meeting of members on Tuesday, the SNPVAC said that "TAP preferred to 'pay to see' the effects of the strike, instead of restoring to the crew what it unilaterally took away from them".
The executive president of TAP, Christine Ourmières-Widener, said she regretted the union's decision and expressed her willingness to find solutions to avoid further disruption.
TAP and the unions are currently renegotiating the Company Agreement as part of the restructuring plan.
TAP proposes wage cuts and more flexible working hours, among other measures.
Dissatisfied, TAP crew members decided at an emergency general meeting of the SNPVAC on 3 November to go on strike on 8 and 9 December and "flatly reject the proposal for a new Company Agreement" presented by the airline, which they consider "absolutely unacceptable and manifestly reductive".
The crew members want the current company agreement to be the starting point and basis for future negotiations.
TAP had submitted a proposal that it said met nine of the union's 14 demands, but it was conditional on the SNPVAC's general meeting being brought forward.
The union said it was impossible to bring the assembly forward, and TAP withdrew the proposal on the table and decided to cancel 360 flights on the day of the strike.
The minimum services for the strike cover the autonomous regions, Portuguese-speaking countries and areas with Portuguese emigrants.
Here are some critical points on the complaints and claims of cabin crew members:

+++ Feeling of revolt and disrespect for professional dignity +++
According to the statement sent out by the SNPVAC, after the emergency general meeting, the TAP cabin crew felt revolted by the "continuous and increasingly accentuated disrespect for their professional dignity, despite the enormous sacrifice they are being subjected to with the compression of rights and social guarantees, aimed at the recovery of the company and the operation itself".

+++ Questionable management acts +++
The SNPVAC accuses the airline of "numerous questionable management acts", highlighting the collective dismissal carried out as part of the restructuring plan, the change of headquarters, or the use of ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance and Insurance) service contracts with foreign companies.
The crew members also point to the controversial replacement of the vehicle fleet, which has since been postponed, or "the hiring of people close to the Executive Committee".

+++ Disrespect for the current Company Agreement
The union accuses the company of disrespecting what is stipulated in the Company Agreement (EA), namely the increase in workloads and flight duty periods (PSV) which penalise the number of working hours.
It also accuses TAP of misinterpreting the rest period before long night flights.
"The planning to be carried out by TAP's cabin crew has led them to permanent levels of tiredness and fatigue, in total disregard for what is stipulated in the Company Agreement", the union said in its statement, where it also complained of an "abusive attitude from the Ground Handling Service (SOE) that puts daily pressure on crew members to carry out flights that don't comply with the rules in force of the Company Agreement".
The union also denounced "violations of parental rights enshrined in law", such as parental leave, the right to breastfeed or flexible working hours.

+++ Comparison with European counterparts +++
The union said that according to the third quarter accounts presented by TAP on 2 November, workers represent 12% of operating costs, which means that in comparison to their counterparts, the Portuguese airline's crew members are "the cheapest in Europe, up to half of what they are paid".

Finally, the SNPVAC complains that TAP has stopped paying the extraordinary supplementary daily allowance and points out that the subsidies are "totally out of date", not having been changed for more than 10 years.
