Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Telecoms operator NOS invests €1.8M in new 5G Lisbon hub

Lisbon,July.4,2022(Lusa)-NOS has invested 1.8 million euros in the creation of the NOS 5G Hub,located in Lisbon, "a living laboratory equipped with the latest technological infrastructure", manager Manuel Ramalho Eanes told Lusa.
"We have created here the most advanced 5G innovation centre in the country and we believe it is the first with this purpose," the manager added.
Located in the NOS building in Lisbon's Parque das Nações, the NOS 5G Hub is an empowerment space for companies, 'startups', universities and partners, occupying an area of 464 square metres and divided into four core areas: demonstration, training, innovation/experimentation and collaborative work.
"The 5G Hub is a living laboratory equipped with the latest technological infrastructures related to 5G that allows the whole process of development, testing and demonstration of solutions that are based on 5G and that use the technologies that 5G allows to accelerate, such as augmented virtual reality, the internet of things, edge computing and data analytics," among others, explained Manuel Ramalho Eanes.
In this lab, "besides the space itself, besides having more than 50 specialists allocated to serve whoever will use this space that can hold 80 people, we have implemented the first private network with 'Core 5G StandAlone' at national level and, my colleagues tell me, one of the first at European level, to ensure that we can explore the present use cases", but also those that will be allowed in the next "three to five years" in terms of innovation, continued the manager.
'Core 5G StandAlone' makes full use of the 5G capability, meaning it will allow us to take more advantage of the unique capabilities of this technology: its higher speed (10 times faster), lower latency, higher density (ability to have one million connected objects per square kilometre) and its resilience.
"The NOS 5G Hub is much more than the physical space", Manuel Ramalho Eanes pointed out.
Firstly, "it is an innovation centre, it encourages innovation and experimentation with new solutions, secondly, it is also a technological ecosystem in the sense that we have associated to this environment and to this space an ecosystem of technological partners that are able to bring together whoever comes" with a problem to solve or with a solution of different technological aspects.
Lastly, "it is also a skills hub because it brings together the technical capabilities, the teams, the resources, the NOS experts, which allow the different partners, the different users of this space, whether from academia, from companies or from various areas of society, to be able to greatly accelerate all their processes of developments from the idea to put the solution into practice," the director of the telecommunications operator pointed out.
"We believe that NOS, as the only national telecommunications company, has the obligation, of this logo, and the pride of playing a key role in the digital transformation process of the country in all areas," he reinforced.
The operator is one of those that "surely invests the most in development in Portugal and has invested the most in the 5G auction" and the company "that from my perspective - and soon surely not only from my perspective - leads the implementation of 5G both in terms of coverage and in terms of quality", he emphasised.
"We believe that we have created here a fundamental tool for the competitiveness of Portuguese companies and institutions", Manuel Ramalho Eanes concluded.
"NOS was the operator that has so far installed the largest number of 5G stations, 1,937 stations (66%), followed by Vodafone with 534 stations (18%) and Meo with 447 stations (15%)," says the country's communications regulator, Anacom, in the first report on the development of this technology disclosed today.
However, if "the total number of existing stations is considered (2G, 3G, 4G and 5G), NOS is the operator with the lowest number of stations, 10,267 stations (27 percent of the total), with Vodafone in first place with 14,684 stations (38 percent), and Meo in second place with 13,779 stations (36 percent)", says the regulator.
Many of the 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G stations of each operator "are located in the same place, so it is important to analyse the total number of places where each operator has stations", considered the regulator, pointing out that "Vodafone has stations in 5,019 places, Meo in 4,883 places and NOS in 3,553 places".
In terms of the number of base stations already installed with 5G technology, the total number in the first half of the year amounts to 2,918 stations spread across 198 municipalities (64% of the municipalities in the country) and 859 parishes (28% of the parishes in the country).
