Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Consórcio proposes innovative therapy to eliminate virus in seconds

Coimbra, Portugal, Sept.23,2020(Lusa)- A consortium formed by the University of Coimbra, Centro Hospitalar e Universitário de Coimbra and two companies, one Portuguese and the other Canadian, wants to develop an innovative therapy to eliminate the virus that causes Covid-19 "in a few seconds" it announced on Wednesday.

Called FOTOVID, the project aims to eliminate the SARS-CoV-2 virus, responsible for Covid-19, "right at the main 'gateway' to the body, i.e. the nasal cavities, using photodynamic therapy," said the University of Coimbra (UC), in a note sent to Lusa.

The FOTOVID is based on the "recent knowledge that SARS-CoV-2 is associated with a protein often present in the nasal cavities, where a reservoir of the virus responsible for the transmission of the disease and spread of the infection is created," said the leaders of the consortium.

Thus, "the inactivation of viruses present in nasal cavities in the early stages of Covid-19 disease may accelerate treatment, allow only the most benign forms of the disease to manifest and do help prevent the spread of the pandemic.

Based on a nasal disinfection technology created by the Canadian company partner in the project, which is already used worldwide to eliminate multi-resistant bacteria, the consortium will develop an innovative therapy capable of killing viruses, in particular the coronavirus responsible for Covid-19.

The research will be "much faster and, in case of success, it will be easier and cheaper", UC said.

"This is the innovation of the project because the technology has never been applied in the inactivation of viruses," said Luis Arnaut, one of the scientists involved in the research, quoted by UC.

"We are proposing a very sophisticated procedure, which has already proven to be effective in the disinfection of nasal cavities, even for multi-resistant bacteria where the existing therapeutic alternatives always fail, in other words, it has been possible to do the inactivation of multi-resistant bacteria with photodynamic therapy," he explains.

In practice, the consortium proposes "a repositioning of molecules," that is, it uses a therapy that "is being used to destroy multi-resistant bacteria," repositioning it to kill viruses.

The first tests will begin in October, at the UC Medical School, with virus samples from patients infected by Covid-19, provided by the CHUC.

Later, when the efficacy of the photodynamic inactivation of the virus is proven, clinical trials (which will be coordinated by specialists Manuel Santos Rosa and José Saraiva da Cunha) with voluntary patients will follow, predictably next year.

Photodynamic therapy is a non-invasive, fast (it can last only a few seconds) and low-cost treatment.

Those responsible for the project said that this technology aims to be the first therapeutic option, eliminating the virus at a very early stage and thus preventing the evolution of the disease to more severe phases.

This is a therapeutic alternative, which consists of directly attacking the entrance door of the virus in the organism, to reduce the viral load in the place where it is more critical, added Luís Arnaut.

The technology "is to be applied at an early stage of treatment, to avoid further complications, in outpatients", he concluded.
