Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Venezuela's president accuses cruise ship of 'terrorism, piracy'

Caracas, Apr. 1, 2020 (Lusa) - Venezuela's president, Nicolás Maduro, accused the Portuguese flagged cruise ship "Resolute" of carrying out an act of terrorism and piracy against a Venezuelan Navy ship that sank Monday after colliding.

Maduro urged the authorities of Curaçao, where the ship is anchored, to investigate this act of international piracy.

"We have to review all the protocols to attend to this kind of cases because a protocol was applied in normal conditions of peace, which applies in international law," he said Tuesday night.

Maduro was speaking at the presidential palace in Miraflores, Caracas, during the activation of the Council of State to debate solutions to fight the Covid-19 pandemic and condemn the recent proposal of the US to form a transitional government for Venezuela.

According to Maduro, the Venezuelan Navy's boat was "brutally" rammed.

"The [Portuguese flag] boat that attacked our ship is eight times heavier; it is as if a 100-kilogram (220-pound) boxing giant grabbed a small boy and struck him," he said.

It is, he said, an act of terrorism and piracy that must be investigated because if it had been a tourist boat it would not have had this attitude of wanting to attack.

"The investigations continue. The authorities in Curaçao, in compliance with international commitments, must do the investigation, officially inform and take action because it was an act of international piracy," Maduro said.

The Venezuelan Defence Ministry said on Tuesday that a Venezuelan Navy ship sank on Monday after a collision with the Portuguese flag cruise "Resolute," north of the island of La Tortuga, located 181 kilometres northeast of Caracas.

According to the Defence Ministry, at 12.45 a.m. on Monday (5.45 a.m. in Lisbon), the Coast Guard ship "Naiguatá GC-23" was performing maritime patrol tasks in the Venezuelan territorial sea, when it was hit by the passenger ship 'Resolute' (122 meters long and 8300 tons of displacement), with the Portuguese flag.

The collision occurred when the Navy vessel was carrying out a maritime traffic control procedure, which generated damage of great magnitude on the Venezuelan Coast Guard vessel, the statement said.

"The action of the ship 'Resolute' is considered cowardly and criminal, since it did not attend to the rescue of the crew, violating international regulations that regulate the rescue of life at sea. Currently, this ship is in the port of Willemstad, capital of Curaçao, where it docked on Tuesday morning," he added.

According to the statement, the search and rescue operations, together with the professional and courageous performance of the Venezuelan personnel, allowed the rescue of the entire crew.

The local press reported that the crew of the "Naiguatá GC-23" consisted of 44 men.

The boat was built by Navantia shipyard in San Fernando, Spain, and delivered to Venezuelan authorities on 24 June 2009.
