Lusa - Business News - Angola: Luanda Railway employees go on strike in pay row

Luanda, Jan. 14 (Lusa) - Employees at Angola's Caminho de Ferro de Luanda (Luanda Railway) went on strike on Monday to demand a salary increase among other measures.
The first secretary of Luanda Railway's labour union, José Carlos, told Lusa that support for the strike of indefinite duration had exceeded expectations, adding that it is taking place in Luanda, Cuanza Norte and Malange.
However, he said there were reports that strikers in Cuanza Norte had been threatened.
Carlos added that the strike came after employees rejected the employer's response following a meeting last Thursday, with Luanda Railway saying it could not afford to raise salaries by 80% as demanded by its employees.
Minimum services required by law are being met with two trains running in the morning and in the afternoon in Luanda, Carlos said.
Strikers are also calling for subsistence allowances and transport among other measures.
