HINA - Croatia launches AI health assistant "ZdrAVKO" to improve public health literacy

ZAGREB, 28 Jan (Hina) - The Croatian Institute of Public Health (HZJZ) and the Ministry of Health unveiled a new AI-based digital health assistant, ZdrAVKO, designed to enhance citizens' health literacy.

Available 24/7 via WhatsApp, ZdrAVKO provides reliable information on disease prevention, including preventive screenings, national early detection programmes, and other health-related topics.

Access is through a QR code on the HZJZ website, and from 1 February, also in pharmacies and health centres. Once scanned, communication begins immediately without additional installation or registration.

HZJZ Director Krunoslav Capak explained that ZdrAVKO offers accurate, expert-based answers drawn from HZJZ databases.

"The AI understands questions and provides relevant responses. It focuses on prevention and health promotion, not diagnosis or treatment. If users ask about treatment or diagnosis, it directs them to their family doctor or to preventivni@hzjz.hr," Capak said.

HZJZ Assistant Director Tomislav Benjak added that the system politely guides users if it cannot provide an answer, and officials expect strong public interest and continued increase in participation in preventive screenings.

Health Minister Irena Hrstić emphasised that ZdrAVKO is meant as a reliable expert source, not a "Google doctor". She noted that it can help citizens prepare for doctor visits, especially those who might avoid asking questions due to fear or time constraints. The tool aims to encourage responsible behaviour and participation in preventive programmes, particularly among younger people.

On social media use among those under 16, Hrstić cautioned that uncontrolled use can lead to isolation and mental health issues. She said any restrictions would require expert consensus, which currently does not exist.

Regarding funding, she noted that this year's health budget has increased by 7.5% compared to last year, exceeding €8 billion, and expressed hope for constructive collaboration with the new finance minister.
