Italy's Jannik Sinner eased into the second round of the men's singles at the Australian Open on Tuesday when his French opponent Hugo Gaston retired with the world number two up 6-2 6-1.
The 24-year-old Italian is bidding to win the tournament for the third consecutive year.
His compatriots Lorenzo Musetti, Lorenzo Sonego and Luciano Darderi are also in the second round.
Fifth-seed Musetti recovered after losing the first set against Raphael Collignon to win the second and third sets before his Belgian opponent retired in the fourth.
He will next face Sonego, who beat Spaniard Carlos Taberner in straight sets.
Darderi defeated Chile's Cristian Garin.
