TIRANA, Jan 4 /ATA/-By Maela Marini/ After the year-end holidays, the Kakavijë border crossing is facing a surge in traffic, mainly in the outbound direction, as migrants make their way back to Greece.
In a statement to ATA, Gjirokastër Prefect Albana Hasanaj announced that 3,555 people have entered through the Kakavijë border crossing in the past 24 hours.
The Prefect of Gjirokastër reported that the busiest flow of movement is outbound, with 7,350 people recorded at the Kakavijë border crossing.
Hasanaj highlighted that the Albanian authorities are managing the crossing with two lanes for arrivals and four lanes for departures.
“On the Albanian side, operations are running at full capacity with enhanced measures in place. The outbound traffic flow remains high,” stated Prefect Hasanaj.
She added that Albanian authorities are in continuous contact and coordination with their Greek counterparts to increase the number of service lanes.
“Currently, the Greek side is operating with three lanes for arrivals and two lanes for departures. At present, traffic is moving at the same intensity. We are on standby to implement additional measures if necessary,” Prefect Hasanaj told ATA.
